"After looking into rescuing a dog, we came across Strays Without Borders. The application process was very straight forward, from the online application form to our video interview via WhatsApp. We weren't sure what to expect as SWB wasn't a well-known rescue at the time, but as soon as we spoke to Hollie and saw how detailed the application process was our worries were put aside.
We passed the interview and based on our lifestyle and preferences we were matched with Mila (formerly Luna). The communication was amazing throughout the next few weeks as we waited to pick Mila up, with regular updates and Milka even arranging a video call for us to see Mila at the shelter.
Mila has made a massive impact on our lives, bringing so much happiness and laughter at her funny ways. She's a lovely natured girl, very gentle and loves other dogs & children. In some ways her kennel experience has been a benefit in making her a lot more socially intelligent with other dogs, and we often have other dog owners commenting on how well she's understood their dog. It hasn't been an easy journey, bringing her into a home for the first time. She is quite fearful of men, and has taken a long time to get more comfortable with Alan. But having the challenging times has made it all the more rewarding when we have seen improvements and noticed more of her personality coming out.
Our advice would be not to compare to others' progress with their rescue dogs, every dog is unique and has had their own journey. We leant on the SWB team heavily at the start and they were amazing, reassuring us that we were doing the right things and offering advice when needed. Always take things at your dog's pace has felt frustrating at times with Mila, but she doesn't owe us anything, helping her settle and feel comfortable was our main goal." - Debbie and Alan
