"Last Summer we started looking at getting a dog and after a short while realised that for us a rescue was the way forward, regardless of the kids wanting a puppy!
I found Strays without Borders by chance and contacted Stephanie here in the UK. She was so helpful and answered all my many questions about taking on a rescue. She also did our home check and we realised that our garden needed work to make it dog proof – and that was proven soon after Lyla arrived when she attempted to jump the fence!
We were put in touch with Snezana who you could tell was so dedicated to the animals and finding them new forever homes. She was very patient with us and showed us photos of three dogs she thought would be suitable and later that week some video footage of the dogs. We then had to decide, which was the hardest part! But Lyla, known as Moni, won us over in the end.
From then on it was full steam ahead sorting out the garden. The dogs journey was really exciting, following them across Europe on WhatsApp with the other families, although I am sure it was scary for the dogs!
Lyla has been a star since she arrived. Initially she was quiet and kept to herself as she worked out who we were, but gradually her tail started to wag and she came for cuddles. She didn’t know how to play with toys but now has favourite soft toys but still doesn’t understand a ball – she just looks up at you when you bounce it as if to say, what are you doing with that? She is a very chilled, independent dog who likes her own space, but also will come for a fuss and a play, usually around 4pm!
The whole process has been so supportive and I can’t recommend the rescue enough.
Taking on a rescue dog has its issues, as you don’t know what the dog has been through, so you need patience. But you are rewarded with a really special friend who grows to be part of your family.
We love Lyla and can’t imagine our family without her in it.
